Experts work on English language training curriculum for the region

The foundation is supporting a team of regional experts in English language curriculum to develop a framework of core competencies for the teaching of English language for professional and business communications. The pioneer programme will be led by the National University of Singapore’s Centre for English Language Curriculum with six ASEAN universities participating in the programme. The first workshop for the programme was held in Singapore from 4 to 9 December 2009.

Striving for excellence in productivity and quality in Mongolia

Over a seven-month period earlier this year, a team of 90 Mongolian senior officials and specialists in productivity and quality learnt more about Singapore’s management framework for productivity and quality, and business and organisational excellence models through a training programme conducted by Nanyang Polytechnic. The training programme will hopefully assist these key experts to shape Mongolia’s masterplan to enhance its economic competitiveness by 2020.

Singapore-India partnership on health care initiative

Some 11 health care institutions and hospitals are working towards enhancing their skills and knowledge in scientific methods to develop health care policies and practices. More than 500 health care and hospital administrators, managers and clinicians from New Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan will participate in workshops and sharing sessions conducted by experts from Singapore Health Services in this 3-year programme.

Sharing technology expertise on construction techniques to earthquake-prone regions in China

Working with faculty members from local universities in earthquake-prone regions in China, the Lien Institute For the Environment will share low-cost and effective technology to local builders in China to strengthen and retrofit buildings to improve their resistance to earthquakes. The foundation is supporting this programme in 6 provinces, namely Sichuan, Hebei, Liaoning, Jiangsu, Shaanxi and Yunnan.

Inaugural Asian Law Deans’ Forum

Fifty primary school teachers of English from Thailand were selected to be trained at SEAMEO Regional Language Centre to enhance their standards of teaching. The establishment of Beacon Schools and Bhutan W.I.R.ED (Weaving Infotech Resources in Education)

Partnership with Standard Chartered Bank to support the set-up of vision centres and the training of vision technicians in India and Bangladesh

The foundation is co-funding two eye care programmes – one in India and the other in Bangladesh, under the global initiative, Seeing is Believing, established by Standard Chartered Bank. In India, vision technicians will be trained to operate in 40 Vision Centres established across 6 states in India. In Bangladesh, health care workers under the Dhaka Urban Comprehensive Eye Care project will learn to develop integrated and sustainable community eye care services to the community.

Temasek Foundation grants RMB13.7 million to support Hainan Province's English teachers and nurses training

The foundation's first capacity and capability building programmes in China were launched on 19 March 2008 in partnership with Hainan Ministry of Education and Hainan Public Health Bureau. The first project is a Two-Year Capacity Building Project for Hainan Master Teachers of English, jointly organised by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation Regional Language Centre, Hainan Ministry of Education and Hainan Normal University , China . The second project is a nurses training project, jointly organised by Nanyang Polytechnic International of Singapore and Hainan Public Health Bureau, China .

Through these 2 programmes, the newly trained master teachers and nursing trainers and specialists will share their knowledge and skills to other teachers and nurses in Hainan , to build up a pool of skilled and professional English teachers and nurses to benefit the community.

Educational leadership training launched in Hanoi

A new partnership between Singapore' National Institute of Education and Vietnam's National Institute of Education Management will see 480 education practitioners trained to enhance their educational leadership capabilities. The foundation supported the first phase of the training programme, under the Vietnam-Singapore Centre for Educational Excellence (VSCEE), with a funding of S$2.1 million.

Nobel Laureate Vernon Smith – a pioneer in experimental economics

Nobel Laureate Professor Vernon L Smith was in Singapore from 12 -14 March 2008 under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade and Industry's Distinguished Visiting Speaker Series. The foundation sponsored Professor Smith's lecture on ‘Dialogue with the Experimental Economist'. In addition, the foundation sponsored the participation of 10 participants from Asia in a 2 day workshop on experimental economics.

Building capabilities of Hainan Province's nurses to raise nursing and healthcare standards
Nanyang Polytechnic's School of Health Sciences (Nursing) will train 156 Hainan Province health officials, nurse educators and clinical nurses through a two year programme supported by the foundation at S$1.5 million.

The programme will help the Hainan Public Health Bureau (HPHB) to acquire new nursing management practices and nursing training pedagogy, and to develop more nursing specialists in critical care, emergency and perioperative nursing.

The Hainan Nurses Training Project is Temasek Foundation's first project in healthcare since its inception.

LEaRN study awards for Asian students to build friendships and networks
80 students from the Singapore Management University and its partner Asian universities will undergo a student exchange programme for a semester. Aside from academic studies, these LEaRN award students will have the opportunity to build bonds with each other through community service projects and cultural exchange activities.

Leaders and Educators in Asia Programme (LEAP) – Building capabilities in Philippine educators
Lecturers from Singapore's National Institute of Education will conduct capability building programme in educational leadership and teaching methods and contents for more than 80 principals and teachers of 11 public and private primary and secondary schools identified by the Ateneo de Manila University (Manila, Philippines). This is the foundation's first programme anchored overseas.

Inaugural Model ASEAN Conference for student leaders
Spearheaded by the National University of Singapore (NUS), more than 60 students from the region (ASEAN University Network) gathered in Singapore to discuss policy issues of interest to ASEAN. The foundation supported this inaugural conference to engage young student leaders in conducting field work and research on projects in cross-national teams over two years, and their efforts will culminate in the presentation of recommendations to the ASEAN Secretariat.

    ASEAN Young Leaders in Singapore for Inaugural Model ASEAN Conference

Leadership Enrichment and Regional Networking (LEaRN) – student exchange programme for Asian student leaders
The foundation partnered the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in its first programme to fund a student exchange scheme between NTU and its partner universities. Students from across Asia will be involved in semester studies, work attachment and community service projects. They will also experience culture immersion through an attachment with host families. The students will have an opportunity to capture their experiences through journaling and sharing with fellow students.
