Community Eye Screening

In Singapore, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and cataracts are the major causes of visual impairment. These eye diseases result in 91,000 and 4,800 people affected by mild/moderate and severe visual impairment respectively. Current eye screening methods are not accurate and cost effective due to limitations of the diagnostic equipment. The National University of Singapore seeks to pilot a new optometrist-led community eye screening model using novel devices, which will reduce the waiting time to see an eye specialist, while enabling early diagnosis, and delivering better healthcare outcomes.
